Abstract

This article addresses the humanization of mental health care in the context of a Psychosocial Care Center for Alcohol and Other Drugs (CAPS AD) and aims to analyze the meanings and manifestations of humanization in the everyday practices of the service, based on the perceptions of professionals and users. This is a qualitative study with an exploratory and descriptive design and an ethnographic inspiration, conducted in a CAPS AD located in the municipality of Vitória da Conquista, Bahia, Brazil. Data production involved semi-structured interviews with three health professionals and two users, combined with direct observation of the institutional daily life, with systematic records in a field diary. Data analysis followed an interpretive perspective, inspired by Content Analysis (BARDIN, 2011), encompassing the stages of pre-analysis, coding, categorization, and interpretation. The results indicate that the humanization of care is expressed through the physical and symbolic organization of the institutional space, practices of care in freedom, and the construction of bonds through welcoming practices and health education, which promote coexistence, participation, and users’ shared responsibility in the care process. It is concluded that humanization in the CAPS AD constitutes an ethical, relational, and political process, produced in the daily interactions, care practices, and institutional arrangements that recognize subjects in their singularity and autonomy.
