REVISITING “THE SOCCER TEAM OF THE PEOPLE OF MINER: A LOOK AT THE NEXT 100 YEARS”

Abstract

The purpose of the text is to provide the reader with a critical review of the book "O Time Do Povo Mineiro: um olhar para os próximos 100 anos" (The Soccer Team of the People of Minas: A Look to the Next 100 Years), recently released in 2021 amid the discussions surrounding the centenary of Cruzeiro Esporte Clube, a Brazilian soccer team based in the state of Minas Gerais. The text explores the sociability fostered by soccer and important aspects of the social history of the sport. In a context of an increasingly commercialized soccer landscape, the work delves into the founding history of the Belo Horizonte club, traces its historical, social, and sporting journey until reaching a century of existence. Additionally, it discusses the construction of social bonds and the sense of belonging to the state of Minas Gerais around the club. The book makes a contribution to the memory of sports and the disputes surrounding its establishment in the state of Minas Gerais.
