THE ORGANIZATION OF ISLAMIC COOPERATION (OIC) AS AN ACTOR: HISTORICAL FORMATION, STRUCTURE, FUNCTIONING AND ROLE IN THE INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM

This study seeks to analyze the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) as an actor in the international system. The OIC has 57 member states in the international arena. Its general objective is to discuss the historical formation, institutional evolution, and role of the OIC in promoting economic cooperation and solidarity among its members. The research question is: how is the OIC viewed in the international system and what roles does it play in it? Methodologically, the research adopts a qualitative approach, of a constructivist-institutional and historical nature, operationalized through literature review and documentary analysis of official and sacred sources. This investigation is structured in five parts: beyond the “Introduction”; second “Foundation and Historical Formation of the OIC”; third “Specialized Agencies of the OIC: the case of the Institute of the Islamic Development Bank – IsDBI”; fourth “Permanent Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation – COMCEC”; fifth “Economic Policy in Islamic Cooperation among OIC Countries” and “Final Considerations”. However, the research results indicated that the OIC is an international actor that has played different important roles in promoting cooperation and solidarity among its members for decades.
