Abstract

The article aimed to understand the strategies used by nurses to develop moral sensitivity and address ethical problems in the care of COVID-19 patients in a hospital setting. A qualitative study was conducted with 18 nurses through semi-structured interviews at a hospital in southern Brazil, which is a reference for treating COVID-19 patients. Data were analyzed using discursive textual analysis. The results showed that nurses were morally sensitive to the ethical problems arising from caring for COVID-19 patients, exercising their moral conscience, spontaneous moral perception, and benevolent motivation through teamwork, autonomy, professional values, and advocacy for patient rights. Thus, it can be concluded that the professional strategies for developing moral sensitivity and addressing ethical problems arising from the pandemic identified in the study can help minimize moral distress for nurses and improve the quality of care provided to patients.
