Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused serious changes in the economic, social and educational spheres, especially in higher education. Therefore, this study sought to build and apply a synthetic index to analyze the impact of the pandemic on the health of university students. This is a cross-sectional methodological study, with a quantitative approach, conducted with 169 students from a federal university of international cooperation in Ceará, Brazil, evaluating stress, anxiety, depression, quality of life using validated instruments, Burnout Syndrome and sleep quality. Each scale was represented in the construction of the index, which ranged from 0 (very high) to 1 (very low). The results revealed a moderate to very high impact on quality of life and the presence of Burnout syndrome, while sleep quality, stress, anxiety and depression had a moderate to very low impact. When jointly analyzing the impact of the pandemic on students' health using the global synthetic index, it was observed that these students had a moderate impact (33.2%) on their health during the pandemic period. These findings highlight the importance of recognizing and addressing the negative effects of social isolation in the context of higher education. Furthermore, the results provide support for the development of educational and health policies aimed at the well-being of students during crises and emergency situations.
