Abstract

Grounded Theory (GT) is a unique research method that has shown low adherence by Brazilian Administration researchers. Its objective is very different from those of other means of qualitative research: the generation of substantive theory based on data. Also called emergent, it is a very specific theory, applicable only to a certain field, and serves as a basis for formal theory. Whatever the category used, its application is not considered trivial, given that it is an intense and long process. This descriptive paper refers to GT use in Administration articles in Scielo database between 2013 and 2022: the evolution in relation to a previous similar mapping, how many of them used GT for substantive theory and how many used GT as a data processing technique, and which GT types were used. The conclusion is that, although there has been an increase in these researchers' interest in using GT, it is still reduced, and when it occurs, preference goes to its use as data processing technique. This research contributes academically because it indicates that, by proving to be methodologically more original, adopters of GT as a research method may stand out from their competitors.
