THE ROLE OF THE WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION IN INTERNATIONAL TRADE

Abstract

This article examines the influence of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on international trade, highlighting how its policies and dispute resolution mechanisms shape the global economic environment and impact trade relations between countries. The objective is to analyze the impact of WTO negotiations on international trade. Using a bibliographic review methodology, the research draws on articles and institutional reports covering topics such as the principles of non-discrimination and reciprocity, the effectiveness of dispute resolution mechanisms, and tensions between developed and developing countries in negotiations. The findings indicate that, although the WTO has achieved significant progress in reducing trade barriers, the rise of neo-protectionism and economic inequalities continue to challenge its effectiveness. It concludes that, to maintain its relevance, the WTO must adjust its practices to emerging global contexts, balancing diverse economic interests and promoting an inclusive approach in its decisions and negotiations.
