The advance of information and communication technologies in contemporary times has contributed decisively to the construction of educational practices centered on active methodologies. In this context, the accessibility of information on the internet makes it possible to carry out in-depth research on crucial issues such as smoking and health education in its broadest areas. Based on these premises, this study aims to acompanny and analyze the research practices carried out by students on these topics. In this context, students in the eighth year of elementary school carried out activities involving a literature review, data collection with questionnaires and presentation of the results to the class. The students' investigative process was monitored throughout the school year with the application of questionnaires and observations in the research field diary. The qualitative data was examined using content analysis and the quantitative data using descriptive and inferential statistics. The conceptual theoretical perspective is inscribed in the conceptual domains of health derived from international documents on health and quality of life, in addition to the assumptions emanating from theories linked to active methodologies. During the process, the students showed a significant improvement in their research skills, expanding their understanding of topics such as health and quality of life, especially in relation to the different systems of the body. In addition, carrying out research with the local community contributed to the development of skills in data analysis and understanding of the importance of different aspects related to health and well-being, as well as demonstrating the possibilities of carrying out research as an educational practice in middle school. Based on these results, the construction of actions aimed at research as an educational practice is a process that makes a major contribution to student learning, especially in relation to crucial issues that involve community life.
