Abstract

Upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) is one of the main gastrointestinal emergencies, with significant clinical and economic impact on the healthcare system. This study analyzed the epidemiology of UGIB in Brazil between 2014 and 2024, using data from the SUS Hospital Information System. Demographic, regional, and mortality variables were evaluated. The results showed a higher prevalence of hospitalizations in male and elderly patients, as well as regional heterogeneity, with concentrations in the Southeast and Northeast. A downward trend in hospitalization rates was observed over the period, while hospital mortality remained stable, with stabilization from 2021 onwards. These findings highlight the relevance of HDA as a public health problem, reinforcing the need for preventive strategies, timely access to diagnosis, and adequate management in order to reduce regional inequalities and biopsychosocial repercussions.
